Head Coach Fredrick Griggs signed for the 2024 season

The Duke City Gladiators have signed Head Coach Fredrick Griggs for the 2024 season

Frederick Griggs' love for football began to take root early in his life, influenced significantly by his grandfather, Earl Griggs Sr., a distinguished member of the Buffalo Bills in the late 1950s. Earl's passion for the game became a guiding force throughout Frederick's football journey, shaping his character and inspiring him to pursue excellence on the field.

Hailing from Tallahassee, Florida, Frederick Griggs emerged as a standout All-State linebacker during his high school playing days. His exceptional skills and dedication to the sport caught the attention of college recruiters, leading him to a collegiate career as a safety and cornerback. Griggs' prowess on the field at NAIA college William Penn earned him two All-American titles, solidifying his reputation as a formidable force in the game.

The dream of playing professional football became a reality for Griggs when he secured a contract with the Canadian Football League (CFL). However, fate took an unexpected turn during a mini-camp with the Calgary Stampedes, as an unfortunate injury led to his release.

Undeterred, Griggs continued his professional journey by joining the arena football world, where he found success with the Cedar Rapids Titans in the Indoor Football League (IFL). For two years, he showcased his prowess as a powerhouse before an injury prompted him to explore new opportunities.

Griggs transitioned through various teams, including the Barnstormers, the Boston Blaze in the Canadian American League, and the Bloomington Edge in the Champions Indoor Football (CIF). It was during his brief stint with the Edge that Griggs discovered the CIF, ultimately leading him to the Kansas City Phantoms. While with the Phantoms, he caught the attention of the Duke City Gladiators, marking a pivotal moment in his career.

As a member of the Gladiators, Griggs became a dominant force on the defensive side, earning the title of Defensive MVP during their first championship. His impact only intensified during his second season, as he was named Co-Defensive Player of the Year, playing a crucial role in securing back-to-back championships for the Gladiators in the IFL.

After two years of remarkable play, Griggs embraced a new role within the Gladiators organization as the defensive backs coach. Reflecting on his transition, he emphasized his ability to relate to players and understand both the players and the business side of the sport, aiming to create a clear and transparent work environment for success.

Fast forward four years, and Frederick Griggs has risen to the position of Head Coach and General Manager of the Duke City Gladiators Organization. He expresses his enthusiasm for the upcoming 2024 campaign, highlighting the influx of new talents and the perfect balance of retained talent from the previous season. Coach Griggs exudes pride in representing New Mexico, stating, "We are proud people in New Mexico, and I'm excited to get this season started because we will be an organization to be proud of." With a legacy rooted in resilience and dedication, Griggs is poised to lead the Gladiators to continued success on and off the field.
